Werrington Athletic—our club.

On July 1st 2008, Abbey Athletic Football Club changed their name to Werrington Athletic Football Club. The goal was to re-enforce where we are based and to further strengthen our identity in the local community. Of course we have and continue to welcome many players who do not reside in Werrington, they are just as much a part of the club.

Abbey Athletic Football Club was founded in 1992 and entered an under 10 team in the Peterborough Junior Alliance League in 1993. The following season, the club had teams in the under 10 and under 11 leagues. Since then, the club has grown year on year and we have teams in nearly every age group, from under 6 to under 18, competing in local tournaments, the Peterborough and District Junior Alliance League and the Peterborough and District Youth Leagues.

Our club believe that at the heart of junior and youth football, is the element of enjoyment, and this is what our club strives to deliver. If the youngsters are not enjoying themselves during training, match days or during the social side, then we as a club have not delivered what we set out to achieve. Everyone likes to win, but at the end of the day if you have done your best and enjoyed yourself then you can hold your head high. In terms of being a part of Werrington Athletic FC, different youngsters will get differing benefits from being a part of the club. For some the social aspect is most important, for others training and improving their understanding of the game and for others the desire to compete on match day. The club encourages and will welcome all youngsters of all abilities and both sexes to come and join in. All that we ask is that as an individual, your attitude is right and that you are prepared to put in the effort, to what is after all a team game.

Werrington Athletic FC achieved Charter Standard status in the 2006/2007 season and has adopted the Football Association’s, standard codes of conduct and policies.

In order to further develop our identity, the club have chosen uniform club colours. So, if you look across a football pitch near you and see a team playing in the navy blue and red Macron kit, then there is every chance you are watching a Werrington Athletic team.

Managers Require Help Please

One of the biggest challenges that the club face is finding new managers to come into the club or support for the existing managers. Yes it is time consuming, but at the same time, so can it be rewarding. Perhaps you are an existing players parent or guardian who may be able to help only part time. Perhaps you are an existing senior player who would like to help with the coaching of some of the younger players. Perhaps you are undertaking your Duke of Edinburgh awards and are looking for community work in which to be involved. In the first instance please contact our secretary by email. We take safeguarding of our players very seriously so you will have to be prepared to have a CRB and other relevant checks.
